Our Story

In 2012, we came together as farmers concerned about Lake Champlain’s water quality and the need for practical support to implement conservation practices and strengthen the future of agriculture. With support from UVM Extension and a Conservation Innovation Grant from NRCS, we became a farmer-led 501(c)(5) organization and knowledge-sharing network.

Today, many founding members still serve on our Board, and our partnership with UVM Extension continues to drive conservation and innovation across the region. Farmers are adopting practices that improve water quality, build healthy soils, and support viable farm businesses, and CVFC has become a trusted voice in watershed and policy discussions.

Our Mission

Our mission is to assist all farmers in implementing agricultural practices that enhance water quality, soil health, and their long-term economic resiliency.

We do this through a unified voice that provides targeted education and outreach, advocates for farmers’ environmental interests, and collaborates with partners to achieve shared goals.

Letter from our Executive Director

Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to learn about our organization and work.

The Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition supports farmers in increasing their acreage of conservation practices through on-farm technical assistance, educational events, and connection to resources. While this technical work is central to what we do, an equally important role is helping farmers communicate their environmental stewardship to the broader Vermont public. We have close to 120 member farms, but our farmer education and technical assistance reaches well beyond that.

What always stands out to me is the level of thoughtfulness and engagement among our farmers. Many are actively participating in, and even leading complex and difficult conversations around agriculture, water quality, and regulation at the highest levels in Vermont. Our Board of Directors reflects that same commitment, building trust and strengthening partnerships with state agencies, environmental organizations, and public stakeholders. There is real momentum in this space, and CVFC is proud to be contributing in a meaningful and constructive way. We collaborate closely with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, UVM Extension, Conservation Districts, and watershed groups across Vermont.

Since its founding, this organization has been driven by the experience, leadership, and initiative of Vermont farmers. The strength of our programs and the scale of our impact reflect the deep engagement of this community. It is an honor to work alongside our staff, board, members, and partners.

I encourage you to learn more, reach out, and engage with our work. We would love to connect.

Warmly,

Kate Longfield

Executive Director
