SUMMARY:TNC Discussion Series: Payment for Nutrient Reduction Practices
DESCRIPTION:The Nature Conservancy of Vermont welcomes you to a discussion series on watershed conservation issues. Topics address questions that Vermont practitioners are grappling with as we advance healthy\, resilient watersheds and human communities. Speakers bring insight based on experience or applied research elsewhere. We discuss related work ongoing in Vermont\, and important considerations toward continuing to advance this work here. \nExperiences of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in developing and implementing rules that enable farmers to be paid for best practices\, financed through a water quality trading scheme. Matthew Claucherty\, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. \nRegister Here \nPossible questions to address: \n\nHow was this scheme designed in Wisconsin and how long has this been underway?\nWhat are the funding sources?\nWhat practices have farmers most employed under the rules?\nWhat factors have been most critical to the success of realizing the intended nutrient reduction outcomes?\nWhat do monitoring data suggest regarding the extent to which the scheme will reduce phosphorus loading over time?\nWhat have you learned regarding social impact? For example\, have farmers’ attitudes about relevant behaviors changed through the course of participation? Was participation equitable (did money go to farmers who were already rich)? Do farmers trust the government more or less now?\n\n

SUMMARY:Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) Program Sign Up
DESCRIPTION:Through AMA\, financial assistance is available for eligible producers to implement conservation practices such as high tunnels\, micro-irrigation and other specific irrigation and water related practices. Through a collaboration with the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA)\, the two agencies will use NRCS experience in providing technical and financial assistance to distribute these funds using NRCS conservation program contracts. \nThis AMA sign-up opportunity in Vermont will prioritize funding opportunities for historically underserved groups\, such as new and beginning farmers\, socially disadvantaged farmers\, and veteran farmers. These producers are eligible for up to 90% payment rates based on NRCS practice scenarios. Contact your local NRCS office prior to the May 14 deadline.
