SUMMARY:No-Till and Cover Crop Conference
DESCRIPTION:Save the date! UVM Extension is hosting the annual No-Till & Cover Crop Conference on February 22\, 2024. It’s all happening in-person at the Double Tree by Hilton in South Burlington. \n \nThis year’s theme is: Building Resiliency and Profitability into your No-Till System.\n \nThe extremely wet 2023 cropping season has made for a challenging crop season\, leaving many farmers wondering what’s next for their fields. Conference attendees will consider subject matter ranging from what happens when you till a no-till field from a soil and fertility standpoint to the impact manure injection can have on your no-till program. They will also hear presentations on getting the most from your cover crops and the impact of using quality seed in your cover crop program.\n \nThe conference website will be updated as presentations and guests speakers are finalized.

SUMMARY:Québec Farmer Panel: Neonic Treated Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Join University of Vermont Extension and the Vermont Bee Lab for a discussion with Québec farmers to learn about their experiences transitioning away from neonicotinoid (“neonic”) treated seeds. In 2019\, Québec limited neonic pesticide use to protect pollinators and our environment. Similar to the New York bill that was signed into law this past December\, these restrictions applied to neonic coatings on corn and soybean seeds\, two of the largest uses of neonics in the province. In this panel discussion with four Québec farmers\, we will learn how they navigated this transition and the challenges they faced. \n Interested in joining the discussion? Register here or online at https://bit.ly/3vz3UbM. You must register to receive the link to access the virtual session. \n View the full session flyer here\, including short bios on the farmer panel.

The overarching goal of the training is to better prepare technical assistance providers for the assistance they will be providing to farmers\, forest owners\, and other land stewards in their roles with Natural Resources Conservation Districts\, state and federal agencies\, watershed groups\, non profit organizations\, and other related groups. This course was created to be directly applicable to the landscapes and land stewards in VT and the Lake Champlain Basin in NY. \n\nWHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?\n\n\n\n\nThis training is for anyone who works with land stewards (including farmers\, foresters\, residential lands\, etc.) to provide technical assistance related to land and soil management. It is aimed at providers in Vermont and the Lake Champlain Basin portion of New York. The goals are for providers to develop their understandings of the current science around soil health\, management practices that support soil health (historic\, current\, and cutting-edge)\, and site-specific considerations when working with land stewards. \nWHAT WILL I LEARN? \nWhat is soil health\, and how do we know if soils are healthy? How do we manage for soil health in our contexts? this will include: Principles of Soil Health and Ecosystem Services\, Soil Structure and Chemistry\, the Living Soil\, Soil Health Assessment Toolbox\, Organic Matter and Composts\, Cover Crops and Diversifying Cropping Systems\, Minimizing Tillage\, Livestock Integration and Agroforestry\, Managing for Water and Soil Structure\, Integrated Pest Management\, Soil Health Management Planning\, Soil Health Economics and Funding \nWHEN AND WHERE? \n\n\nOne Fall 2023 Workshop on Tuesday\, November 14\, 2023: 9 am-2pm at the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) Farm at 1949 East Main Street\, Richmond\, VT 05477 \n\n\n12 Winter 2023-2024 Webinars: Online on Tuesdays from 2-4 pm: 12/5\, 12/12\, 12/19\, 1/9\, 1/16\, 1/23\, 1/30\, 2/6\, 2/13\, 2/20\, 2/27\, 3/5 \n\n\nFour 2024 Field Season Workshops – TBD \n\n\nQUESTIONS? \nPlease contact us at info@FranklinCountyNRCD.org
