DESCRIPTION:UVM Extension and the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition (CVFC) will host a soil health workshop on January 28 from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm at the UVM Extension Office in Middlebury (23 Pond Lane\, Middlebury\, VT 05753).  \nThis workshop will be focused on the new suite of soil health tests available through the SHREC Lab. It will introduce participants to what these tests measure\, how they differ from standard soil tests\, and the practical benefits they can provide for on-farm decision-making.   \nDuring the session\, we will: \n\nwalk through proper soil sampling techniques\ndiscuss which fields or management scenarios are best suited for soil health testing\nexplain the key indicators included in the SHREC soil health report\, such as measures related to soil structure\, biological activity\, and nutrient cycling\n\nParticipants will gain a clearer understanding of how these indicators can be interpreted and used to inform management decisions related to crop productivity\, nutrient management\, and long-term soil resilience. \nPlease note that lunch will not be provided at this event. DESCRIPTION:As more Vermont dairy producers look to increase homegrown forage and reduce purchased feed costs\, there has been an increased interest in corn and soybeans grown for grain in Vermont. \nWith the implementation of new crops come new challenges. Join UVM Extension for a workshop designed to provide practical information on growing\, harvesting\, and storing grains\, as well as the impact on water quality and soil health. This is the second workshop in an ongoing series related to grain production for dairy farms. \nThis meeting is a collaboration among three UVM Extension teams — Ag Business\, Northwest Crops and Soils\, and Champlain Valley Crop\, Soil and Pasture Team. It is co-hosted by the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition. The day’s agenda includes: \n\nHeather Darby and Northwest Crops and Soils team will discuss considerations on varieties of corn and soy optimal for the Northeast.\nAbby Augarten and Joshua Faulkner from the Champlain Valley Crop\, Soil and Pasture team will present preliminary data on nutrient balances and the water quality impacts of growing soybeans.\nA farmer panel comprised of producers who have integrated grain production into their operations will share the knowledge they have gained.\n\nThis is a free event and lunch will be provided. In 2019\, Québec limited neonic pesticide use to protect pollinators and our environment. Similar to the New York bill that was signed into law this past December\, these restrictions applied to neonic coatings on corn and soybean seeds\, two of the largest uses of neonics in the province. SUMMARY:Soil Health Training for Technical Assistant Providers
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Natural Resources Conservation District has been working with a team of advisors from UVM Extension\, USDA-NRCS\, Vermont Healthy Soils Coalition\, Vermont Agency of Agriculture\, Food\, and Markets\, American Farmland Trust\, and others\, to create a soil health training course for technical assistance providers. The overarching goal of the training is to better prepare technical assistance providers for the assistance they will be providing to farmers\, forest owners\, and other land stewards in their roles with Natural Resources Conservation Districts\, state and federal agencies\, watershed groups\, non profit organizations\, and other related groups. This course was created to be directly applicable to the landscapes and land stewards in VT and the Lake Champlain Basin in NY. \n\nWHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?\n\n\n\n\nThis training is for anyone who works with land stewards (including farmers\, foresters\, residential lands\, etc.) to provide technical assistance related to land and soil management. It is aimed at providers in Vermont and the Lake Champlain Basin portion of New York. The goals are for providers to develop their understandings of the current science around soil health\, management practices that support soil health (historic\, current\, and cutting-edge)\, and site-specific considerations when working with land stewards. \n​WHAT WILL I LEARN? \nWhat is soil health\, and how do we know if soils are healthy? DESCRIPTION:Join UVM Extension at Woodlawn Farm to discuss integrating corn grain and soybean production into your farming operation. Seth and Kate Leach will talk about their investment in grain infrastructure and the benefits to adding this enterprise to their dairy operation. \nThis meeting is a collaboration with the UVM Extension Ag Business and the Northwest Crops and Soils Team. Jeremy Russo and Whitney Hull from UVM Extension’s Ag Business team will highlight how growing your own grains impacts input costs\, cow health and milk production. Heather Darby and Je Sanders\, from the Northwest Crops and Soils team\, will cover important agronomic practices when growing grains\, as well as benefits to soil health. \nThis workshop will be the first in a series\, with future workshop locations in Addison and Franklin Counties. This is a free event and lunch will be provided.
